DIAGNOSIS

Diabetes is a disease that affects 15.8 million people in the U.S. It is the leading cause of end stage kidney failure, blindness, and non-traumatic lower limb amputations. Diabetes is a significant contributor to cardiovascular disease and the fourth leading cause of death. Ten to 15% of the population over 50 years old is affected by diabetes and the care and treatment of those with this disease costs over $1 billion annually. Diabetes is unique among chronic diseases in that 90% of the care must be done by the one who has the disease. The person diagnosed with diabetes becomes responsible for testing and recording blood sugars, taking medications at appropriate times and dosages, exercising regularly, and adjusting food intake to carbohydrate, calorie, and blood sugar needs. Having diabetes can be frustrating and overwhelming. Often learning to take care of it becomes a full-time job. |

EDUCATION PROGRAM

Research continues to prove that controlling blood sugar reduces risk of complications by as much as 76%. Evidence proves that diabetes education programs decrease the risk of blindness, kidney failure, and amputations. Self-monitoring of blood sugar gives you instant feedback on how your behavior impacts your blood sugar. After attending a self-management course, people are three times as likely to test their blood sugar. Learning to control your diabetes gives you the power to make the changes necessary to alter the course of the disease. The Diabetes Education Program at Naples Medical Center can lead you through the journey of self-monitoring, carbohydrate counting, and foot care that leads to self-management. The Naples Medical Center physicians follow the standards of care recommended by the American Diabetes Association and the Florida Medical Practice Guidelines for diabetes to ensure the highest quality care. Nationally certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians are available to teach comprehensive group classes and individual sessions. For more information or to register for diabetes education call (239) 261-3912. Knowledge is power. Learning about your disease and how to take care of it gives you a choice. Education gives you the knowledge to learn to control your blood sugar and your diabetes. Education gives you the power to change the outcome of your life. |
